Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The ex-president was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.

This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the potential of his move to foreign missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of organizing to request asylum through a consular facility", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist American leader President Trump, causing him to enact a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a detention review on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that the former president be authorized to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was convicted of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which included plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The plot was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. His successor was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged government buildings in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The police took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The justices found that the protesters had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the time, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the court case a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 national vote.
